Digital technology is a product of extreme oppression September 1, 2011

Consider the working conditions inside Foxconn factories, a corporation that manufactures for Apple and so on. Transhumanists need to take this reality seriously. Without the acknowledging and working against of the horrors of industrial capitalism, we tacitly support them when we dream of the potential of the digital technology.
Because of negative media attention and market dynamics, Foxconn wants to replace workers with robots. While a laudable notion in an economy oriented toward the common good, under existing circumstances the unemployment resulting from automation may make life even worse for the working class.

“After the unwanted media attention from the suicides, Foxconn installed nets to catch would-be jumpers . . ”
Surreal. So the jumpers are potentially caught, and then what? Monitor their food, so they don’t poison themselves, ban razors, so they don’t exsanguinate, etc?
Illustrative of the race to the bottom. As if rust belt states will be rewarded by “job creators” for turning our backs on our pro-labor and progressive values and traditions. It’s a sucker’s game. The age of the J.O.B. is over, over, over.
