Beyond philosopher kings December 6, 2010

IEET has refeatured the importance piece by James Hughes on liberal democracy versus technocratic absolutism where he  criticizes the elitism of many in the movement. However, everyone should remember that they have options beyond embracing representative democracy, accepting an AI overlord, or taking our money and running (this only works for folks with money anyway). Direct community empowerment and non-hierarchical organizing stand more consistent with the values of freedom and equality than does focusing on elected bosses. As I wrote back in June, I suggest that Hughes’s quest for a form of governance better in line with his principles is in vain; to achieve liberty one must renounce ruling and being ruled. Hughes and I share many values; as per the book by C. Alexander Mckinley, we anarchists are the bastard children of the Enlightenment. Primarily our methods differ.
