I just attended a talk by Fine on her book Delusions of Gender, which argues that the actual science does not support popular notions of hard-wired sex difference. She cautions researchers that the evidence shows these narratives of inherent advantage and disadvantage have demonstrably negative effects, such as on women taking math tests. The sloppy experiments and sensational claims shame the entire field. None of this surprised me, but I’m always pleased to find rigorous backing for my intuition.
