I fear fragility, oppression,  and want continuing indefinitely. While worthy of consideration, speculative apocalypses pale in comparison with the intolerable present. This comes as a response to Kyle Munkittrick’s recent piece. Ey writes against the notion of a near-term extinction event through rogue artificial general intelligence. I found the argument only convincing for perhaps the next decade. While I acknowledge the various doomsday scenarios as conceivable, struggling against the horrors already with us strikes me as the most pressing task. At least a relentless paperclip maximizer would end suffering!
