They assigned the code-name “Geronimo” to Osama bin Laden. This matches an established practice of using the long battle to subdue the continent as an analogy for military action in the Middle East and Asia. Thus, even in the minds of participants, present-day U.S. warfare exists as a continuation of earlier imperialism.
