That’s the purpose of transhumanism, right? Eir list isn’t bad, though this talk of converting the universe into computronium betrays a problematic cosmic mission and the path Anissimov envisions to reach the nice things assumes a technological sky daddy (or perhaps a senate of such patriarchs). Consider the following:

Hopefully whatever singleton we are stuck with still allows a wide berth for personal experimentation, perhaps with supervision by AI experts who have already “been there”.

This shows how Anissimov and company conceive of singletons in traditional terms of state power: Oh, would that we are lucky enough to have a monarch enlightened enough to grant us liberties! This model of authority enshrined forever in an invincible robot god inspires only nightmares. No safe roads exist, but autonomy and decentralization offer better prospects than these totalitarian dreams.

“this talk of converting the universe into computronium betrays a problematic cosmic mission”

Huh? What do you mean?

I mean the idea – popular amongst transhumanists – that our destiny as a species involves permeating the universe with intelligence. It’s a simultaneously beautiful and terrifying cosmic mission.
