Nostalgia for the Golden Era of Revolutionary Fervor September 18, 2011

Within the academy – and I mean particulary my department of American Studies and related humanities fields – I feel we sometimes befuddle ourselves through a fixation on theoretical sophistication. Though I overwhelmingly agree with postmodernist suspicion of totalizing grand narratives and fixed identities, in moderation these so-called errors have immense practical significance. By relentlessly analyzing the historical construction, uncertainty, and oppressive implications of leftist politics along with everything else, contemporary scholarship can facilitate intellectual paralysis. Social struggle requires claims to knowledge and identifiable subjects. We don’t deed The Truth, only enough clarity to build an effective movement at this moment in time. I desire to see more old-fashioned and simplistic historical materialism included into the parade of brilliant deconstructions.
